Looking back, briefly…

In Uncategorized on December 31, 2013 at 7:25 am

I’ve wrapped up 2013 with a wonderfully magical trip to visit The Mouse.  My feet are sore, but I am rejuvenated and revived, ready to start another year.  The trip has been way too full to document in real time, but you will be treated to a montage in a couple of days.

Let’s put together a medley of  2013’s greatest hits…  First, and probably most significantly,

I celebrated my 60th birthday in February…

027

I dreaded this change of decade for months before it occurred and it took me months afterward to accept the inevitable.  The changes in my body and face still surprise me, as if they had happened suddenly and without warning.   I’m still not too happy about the sagging, but it’s better than the alternative.

I spent lots of time with grand-daughters…

Family…

and friends…

There were some fests, trails, craft and car shows, and Always Nashville…

We painted, carpeted, repaired, and landscaped…

I’ve got to fill up my mug and head on back home.  Have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve.

I leave you with this quote…

Rarely, if ever, moments come that are so defining in our lives.  The years are glutted with benign matters which impact us more deeply than we could have ever imagined in our youth.                   —-Joel T. McGrath

Merry Christmas !!!

Counting down to Christmas: 2 more days…

In Uncategorized on December 22, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Both Casey and Jr. were called out to close a road this morning, so we didn’t make it to church.   We did, however, make it to Olive Garden for luncheon, then back here to open presents.

After some exciting naps and songs, we all drove through the Fantasy of Lights, which really was fantastic…

We’ll all be at church together on Christmas Eve.  Casey and I are planning on leaving Christmas Day…

3 days, 17 hours,  28 minutes until WDW!!!

Counting down to Christmas: Solstice edition

In Uncategorized on December 21, 2013 at 12:57 pm

Did you get to enjoy the Full Cold Moon on the 17th-18th?  The skies were clear here at Sonnystone and the moon was Huge, its light a wonder, blue-white, reflected by a layer of snow still covering the gardens and grass.

The snow is all gone now, rained out by flooding waters.  As the moon wanes, the color is now mud-gray…  Not pretty, but there’s still something to celebrate!  We begin Winter and the promise of a little bit more sun-time every day.  The word solstice comes from the Latin words for “sun” and “to stand still”.  Evidently the star-gazers have observed this phenomena ever since they started gazing, but the sun is Really moving ever so slightly north during these days, increasing our daylight hours.  It must have been a pretty important day to the Ancient Astronomers, because they sure built some interesting structures to catch that returning light…

It’s hard to feel too bright about  all this on a gray day like today…as Steve Martin said, ” A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”

But I’ve still got the Christmas spirit, kids.  We finished up at school in festive fashion, lots of candy, cookies, cakes and hugs.  The home-baked goodies are worth the calories!  Sister Donna and I are meeting up at Trinity UMC for candlelight “Messiah”.

But I’m mostly obsessed with my Disney trip now.  I Love the “My Disney Experience” .  If you remember, the WDW folks are testing out some new stuff with our family.  It’s mostly the use of wristbands, access to FastPasses before we arrive, and mobile programs to help guide us through the park same-day.    The “My Disney Experience”, hereafter called MDE, allows me to plan to a degree satisfies my deep need to control.  We pick a Disney character to “be” and I am convinced that I Really am Mrs. Incredible…

Just another selfie…

I need to bring myself back to today…and Christmas…but Santa has a lot of competition from Mickey this year!

5 more days until WDW!!!

Sift, blend, beat, add, mix well.   Stir in, drop, bake…

Is there any better cookie than good old chocolate chips?  Well, maybe snickerdoodles…tomorrow…

Counting down, #10

Our Christmases seem to change every year and since the grandchildren have arrived, there’s been no clear-cut tradition for my family.  I have tried (successfully), to go along with whatever circumstances may arise.  Melissa’s job as a church musician means that she must always be in NYC for Advent and the Big Day.   Both her children were born in January, so those years she was unable to travel to Indiana at all.  Every other year Michael’s in-laws take over the holiday, so Casey and I have learned to just plan another time or occasion to celebrate with our kids.     We send along gifts  to be wrapped and placed under the tree for the grandkids, so we’re there in spirit; then  find someplace to go or something else to do on Christmas…and it’s…okay.

This year, however, is the first year I haven’t actually put up a Christmas tree.  As you probably noticed, I’ve decorated the mantels and put out the Mr&Mrs collection.  There’s a lit Santa Claus on the front porch and a large wreath hanging from the top window.   The ceramic Christmas tree that my mother made for me, along with her little town display is also displayed, and I’ve brought out all of my Christmas piano music.  But no tree…and it’s…weird, but okay.

The season is marching on.   The snow is melting, so we’re making up for lost time at the mall and the restaurants.  I met up with Sister Donna at Barnes and Noble yesterday and we exchanged gifts, kinda.  We’ll finish up sometime this week, though, and I’ll take some pictures.  Today was the children’s service at church;  Olivia placed the “unity” on the star…

009

5 more days of school, yee-haw!!  I have tickets for “Messiah” on Saturday.  Next Sunday we’ll open a few presents with the Jrs.  That will conclude the Sonnystone portion of our Holiday Season…

I’ll be trying my best to report in Real Time.  Until later…

11 more days until WDW!!!

me, myself, and I

In Uncategorized on December 7, 2013 at 7:11 pm

I am a leetle stir-crazy…just a smallish touch of cabin-fever secondary to aloneness.   Earlier, while yelling at the TV, I realized I had lost it and went back to talking to myself, only to discover I was incoherent.     Stirred up a batch of oatmeal cookies, thinking I could control myself…bwaa-haahaa..   Licked the beaters, my fingers, the tablespoon, and the bowl…also ate a dozen of them after baking…   Please let me get out of the house SOON!!!

Crazier yet, and kinda creepy…here are some self-portraits…

I am seriously serious about my mind-loss.  I started snapping pics of the decorations, as well…

And the piano…

And you should have seen the ones I deleted…   Well, maybe not.

017

I just hope that predicted ice-storm is a no-show…

19 days until WDW!!!

Snow Day…

In Uncategorized on December 6, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Ugh, the weather outside is frightful…

And the fire, though cozy, is not Really delightful…

005Though I”ve no place to go, I still don’t like the snow…   I could easily live without it, as I’ve told you every year.   A little smattering would be fine, but 6+ inches on top of an inch of ice is not my idea of fun.  Casey’s out plowing the roads and I’m a little lonely.  Funny how happy memories can make me sad…

But just in case you actually Like snow, or think you do because you live in a warmer clime, here’s some pretty pictures…

I wish You were here in the warm with me, singing around the piano, drinking a cup of hot chocolate or Irish coffee…

Brightest spot of the day:  Finishing up my Christmas shopping, starting on my Christmas cards…and best yet:

20 days until WDW !!!

Put on your mittens, kids, or your fingers will fall off…seriously…
