A birthday today…

In Uncategorized on November 30, 2013 at 6:55 pm

Casey celebrated his birthday today, 59-years-old.  After reading the morning news,

001

he proceeded to work outside all day, doing the stuff that he does so well.  We spent yesterday getting out and putting up the Christmas stuff (which I will obsessively re-arrange throughout the season).   Tonight we’ll fall asleep in front of the TV.   Tomorrow we’ll have some cake with the Jrs. after church.    It’s a crazy life we lead.

My camera is acting weird…when I tried to fix it, I think I may have kind of messed it up more.   Is this a sign?   Maybe Casey needs a new camera for his birthday…   I’ll take some pictures at tomorrow’s celebration and we’ll decide how to proceed.  Until then…

O, give thanks…

Hope you’re having a great day…

Thanksgivukkah_0

I’ve been fascinated by the merging of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, pondering the astrological message, wondering if I really should cook my turkey in Manischewitz wine,  with Adam Sandler stuck in my head singing, “Put on your yarmulke!  It’s time for Hanukkah!”   It’s just Casey and me this year, though, so I went decidedly un-kosher with a sausage/hashbrown breakfast casserole…

Nearly as fascinating has been watching the annual facebook phenomena of “daily thanks”.   I know, I know, I sound so unthankful to mention it, but often they start out strong, running through the deep tributes to their family and friends in the first days, so that  2 weeks in, they’re thankful for doorknobs and velcro…

The exercise of daily thanks is commendable though, and I am grateful every morning when I wake up…for all the deep stuff like you and You and even YOU, as well as the lame stuff like sperrys and make-up…and especially for finally getting the Adam Sandler loop out of my head, replacing it with…

With Your feast You feed us,  With Your Light now lead us,

Unite us as one in this life that we share…

(Thank-you very much for reading my blog…)

I’ve got that nasty respiratory thingy that’s going around;  red nose and eyes to prove it.  That’s the norm for the season, isn’t it?  We pass around the viruses with the Thanksgiving turkey…

It’s cold and ugly outside, and we’re moving all of our large planters from the back porch into the garden shed this week-end.  This is their final stop for the winter…  Our woodpile is piled, our leaves are spread over the perennials…time to come inside and curl up with a good book, a steamy cup of tea, and mellow music.

Reading Now:  Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage  Stories ,  a collection of short stories by Alice Munro.  I’ve been a little unfocused with my reading since finishing up the Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin mystery series, trying to get caught in a series or drawn into an author as good as Rex Stout.  This title was recommended by BN, I noticed it at the library earlier this week and checked it out.  I had read some of Munro’s stories in The New Yorker and truly loved her style, so I’m not surprised that these stories are all brilliant.  (She won the Nobel Prize for Literature this year, but don’t hold that against her)

Listening Now:  Neko Case, Iris Dement….2 extraordinary ladies;  they both recently released some new music, but I’m still listening to “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” and “Infamous Angel”.  I need to buy their new stuff, too.

Counting down Now:  I’m skipping over Thanksgiving Day and skimming past Christmas Day to 12/26/13, the day we’ll all check in down at Walt Disney World for our bi-annual visit with Mickey.  This one promises to be a doozy, as the imagineers test out some new technology with our family.

You might have noticed that I’ve been fiddling with the look of this blog.  I like it, but it screams for photos, don’t you think?  I’ll be snapping some shots this week-end, but until then……

The Trip, abridged…

In Uncategorized on November 14, 2013 at 7:20 am

I love New York City in autumn.   It’s such fun to stroll through Central Park, crowd-watching and listening to jazz while still getting your nature-fix…

Or to visit the Whitney and the unique Robert Indiana exhibit…

Times Square, Broadway Shows, the Rockettes, The Freedom Tower, Lady Liberty..it’s all there  waiting for you….

If you’re lucky enough, you have a daughter who sings with the NYC Philharmonic Chorus and she gets you a really hot ticket that you could have sold for a profit but you keep it and feel your soul stir as you listen to Bach, Handel, and Mozart’s Requiem….

And all of that is a certainly a wonderful reason to visit New York City in autumn…

But for me, the Big Attraction of the Big Apple,  the stars of my visit are these little girls:

This Family…

Thanks, Jose’ Fam…See ya real soon at WDW…  (don’t forget to activate your wrist-band)…

Finding the time…

In Uncategorized on November 5, 2013 at 10:01 am

I experience the “fall back” time change as a loss.  True, it’s somewhat easier to drag-ass out of bed, but I prefer the light at the end of the day.   As I’m getting ready to visit NYC for a couple of days, I miss that hour acutely.   Pressure to wrap everything up at work and around the house is building,   I’m watching the weather to determine what to wear.   It’s just 4 days, so  how difficult can packing  be?

It’s not so bad, but it leaves little time for blogging.   I hope you understand.

Here’s the plan:  Drive to Nashville Thursday right after work, catch 6:30 flight, ARR Laguardia 9:30.   I should be hugging grandgirls by 10p.

Melissa will be rehearsing and/or singing most of the first 3 days…almost like it’s a job or something…  Eric has stayed home to corral the kids for the week and will be my guide.  It’s been a while since I’ve been on tour with the big E and I’m very excited.  We will strive to remain upright.

I’ll stay in touch, definitely will be checking in on fb, and thinking of you often…
